shared stories from Highlander: 7/7 - 7/9

I see, hear, feel so many people having realizations, break-throughs, epiphanies, those moments when some things click in their brain and they say, “ah hah” or “yeah” or “hmmm” those golden moments when we are moving forward. when we are pushed by someone, when we are open to growth and change. It is an inspiring feeling and I’m excited for many more. I also wanted to point out that we sometimes get so caught up in process, in asking what we’ll do when x happens or planning and getting agreement from everyone. It doesn’t leave space for one to take risks and be courageous and really create change.

ZAPA-CALIFO: Atenco Film
Submitted by ray on Fri, 2006/06/30 - 6:56pm.Hey everyone! Just wanted to try out this blog and also offer this amazing video about police brutality in Mexico. I found it intriguing. Let me know if you have ever been in a situation like that or just your thoughts on the event. Peace!
http://salonchingon.com/cinema/otra_canal6atenco.php?city=ny
Synopsis (from the Canal 6 de Julio website):
This video analyzes the events in San Salvador Atenco during the
first
days of May, 2006 and denounces the violation of the civilian
population’s human rights by state and federal police forces. The
documentary deconstructs the mass media’s operating methods, which
were responsible for creating a climate of fear and an information
blockade on the events in San Salvador Atenco, in the midst of an
especially delicate situation: the 2006 process of presidential
succession in Mexico.
NOTE: Much of the violence in Atenco was captured by television
cameras,
but few outside of Mexico have seen this footage. The filmmakers
present
not only the in-the-street shots of police savagely beating “anything
that moved, but also clips of the commercial news anchors flagrantly
calling out for more repression of the popular movement from the state.
Combined with Canal 6 de Julio and Promedios’ own work investigating
the
scene in Atenco and interviewing many of the townspeople, this is a
powerful document of a turning point in Mexican history.
The film is available for download from this website as a large,
high-resolution AVI video file or broken down into three parts, in
lower-resolution Windows Media and QuickTime formats for faster
download.
According to Canal 6 de Julio and Promedios, the copying, distribution
and
use of this video is permitted for non-profit purposes, as long as full
credit is given to the filmmakers.

We Make The Road By Walking
Submitted by doyle on Fri, 2006/06/30 - 1:23pm.Hey STORY Collaborative'peeps...
Here are some inspiring words coming out of the his/herstory of the Highlander Center ...
Founded in 1932 in Monteagle, TN, by Myles Horton and Don West, and relocated in New Market, TN in 1972, Highlander Research and Education Center has always been dedicated to the belief that working-class people can learn to take charge of their lives and circumstance. As aptly stated in the title to Myles Horton's autobiography, Highlander has been in the struggle for social justice and participatory democracy for The Long Haul (Horton 1990). The praxis at Highlander is guided by a concern for social justice and an understanding of the need to reorient society from an autocratic, authoritarian bias, to an egalitarian, participatory democracy. Horton believed that the reason Highlander has been so successful is ". . . that you have to trust the people, you have to love the people, and you have to care for the people. You have to practice what you preach with people" (Conti and Fellenez, 1986:15). As a central location in which marginal groups carry on the struggle for a democratic society, and as a well-known place of resistance, Highlander offers insights into many of the principles of popular education.

It will be powerful
Submitted by lovella on Fri, 2006/06/30 - 12:08pm.this weekend. It will be powerful. I am anxious to
build with people, think strategy and have lots of
fun. The people attending are inspiring and have
unique perspectives and experiences. This is super
important when making plans and having real
conversations about how to stop this disgusting war.
It’s time to think outside the box, it’s time to tell
our stories, it’s time to listen to each other’s
hearts, it’s time to grow, it’s time to move. Let’s
be courageous and let our minds dance together this
